Poker run Saturday to raise money for cause
United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan’s fourth annual Benjamin Franklin Memorial Poker Run is coming up Saturday.
April and Ben Franklin of Lansing, started the event four years ago in memory of their son, Benjamin, who was born with cerebral palsy and passed away at the age of 3 in 2003. The event will feature a silent auction and a dinner after the ride, in addition to a raffle and prizes. Both the ride and dinner are open to the community.
The ride begins and ends at the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 333 Union Hall, 5405 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Start time is at 11 a.m. The dinner will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Plumbers and Pipefitters Hall.
In a poker run, contestants on motorcycles, in cars or in trucks, will pick up a playing card at five designated locations. The person whose five cards make up the best poker hand wins a prize at the end of the run.
The event raises money to support improved quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Last year, the run raised more than $7,500.

Dr. Ian Lang, (Lt. U.S. Navy), was honored with three awards as a graduating Internal Medicine resident at a ceremony on June 25 at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, Calif.
Lang received the Captain Colleen Counihan Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, given annually by the internal medicine interns to honor the resident whose example, encouragement, and teaching contributed most to a successful academic and training year.
The Captain George Luiken Award, presented by the staff of the Hematology-Oncology Division, honored Lang as the graduating resident who best emulates the principles of caring, compassion, and dedication to his patients.
The Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal was awarded to Lang in recognition of his work organizing, implementing and co-directing the group diabetes clinic. The citation noted that Lang’s efforts contributed to an ideal learning environment for future residents and that his professionalism, personal initiative and unswerving devotion to duty reflected credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval service.
Lang has been assigned to the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, S.C. He and his wife, Lauren (Rutledge), are both graduates of Okemos High School and the University of Michigan.
